Character Name: Noctis Lucis Caelum
Character Age:20
Canon: Final Fantasy XV
Canon Point: Chapter 13 - Particularly during the search for Prompto after his capture by the Empire.
History:
Personality: "Above all else, I am a man."
These are works spoken from Noctis himself. Words that are incorrect, and a large definition of how he ultimately sees as his place. Noctis is prince of Lucis, and sole heir to the throne in taking place of his recently deceased father, King Regis Lucis Caelum. While at first glance, this appears as just defiance of what his ultimate destination is in his growth, this is actually a sign of the fear Noctis feels for the responsibility before him.
Noctis grew up as an only child, having lost his mother at an early age. This left him with a single father who held the responsibility of a child and the entirety of the Lucian kingdom. This, obviously, put a strain upon the time that the king would have to spend time with his child. Noctis holds absolutely no disdain towards this, and absolutely doesn't blame his father for needing to prioritize his time depending on the state of the kingdom. But it was a lonely existence, and Noctis' guardians, servants, and teachers were ultimately the ones to raise him. As a member of the royal family, Noctis' life was carefully calculated and handled. This has made him actually quite awkward in the face of socializing, even with him choosing to go to a normal high school while living in an equally normal apartment. From his young age to even his adulthood, he has always been the soft-spoken, reserved type.
Most of his temprement is as calculated and planned out as his upbringing. Noctis maintains a sort of aloof, cool attitude that is ultimately forced in the face of talking to others. There are plenty of moments where Noctis' armor is cracked, and he isn't necessarily afraid to show it. He cries, scowls, and argues. Being calm and cool isn't his priority, but it is a type of attitude he tries to maintain to not appear as if he can't handle his place in life.
That being said, Noctis also faces his responsibility and fate with a careless attitude at first. For most of the game, you see both Ignis and Gladiolus often reminding Noctis that he should carry himself as the future king he is. This is shown multiple times through his upbringing, where he has purposefully ignored political reports and has put his normal schooling ahead of his royal duties. Being the king scares him, intimidates the living hell out of him, and sometimes he would rather pretend the responsibility is there than fight it.
Of course, at his canon point, he has grown to understand that his responsibilities are not going away. Noctis' destiny is to replenish the light among the land, to ceases the nights from growing longer, and to protect his people in the process. It's a heavy burden to accept, but he takes his time in coming to terms. In his quiet intensity, he is thoughtful and careful in his decisions going forward.
That isn't to say that he refuses to enjoy life as the young man that he is. Noctis has a sarcastic and even laid-back sense of humor that he frequently shows to his friends and family. Prior to his leaving of the Crown City, he has been shown to make gentle jabs at the king in light of the reason for his journey to marry Lady Lunafreya. He sarcastically bows, smirking and calling his dad "Your Highness". It's not necessarily appropriate to face his place in the world with comedy, but it's better than being outright mortified and uncomfortable. He desires to be normal, but fully knows that will never happen.
Noctis is quite intelligent, despite not being completely satisfied with his duties. This is the case in the art of battle as well, and he's managed to become quite the proficient fighter with help of Gladio. His determination was fostered at a young age, built and groomed to create a sort of stubbornness that he shows throughout the entire game. When asked to back out of a fight and accept that he is outnumbered, he often refuses. This stubborn attitude is shown in his casual demeanor as well, which ties into what a few people like to call "entitlement" and spoiled behavior.
He is, after all, a prince. Being a prince comes with a life of privilege and little to no "normal" responsibility. I.E. bills, cooking, cleaning, etc... Because of this, Noctis has actually developed a bit of a frustrating attitude where he believes most of these responsibilities are not his problem. He's quite the slob when it comes to living on his own, and he's often allowed Ignis to go ahead and clean up after him (there is a brief moment where he expects it until confronted). Noctis is terrible at cooking, cleaning, and managing his time because he has been allowed to rely on others to handle this. While his spoiled nature is pretty subtle throughout the game, it comes out during minor times such as being served food with vegetables (big baby who hates them), camping in the rain, and having to walk long distances. He whines often, and while he doesn't argue if Gladio corrects him and puts him in his place? It doesn't appear that it will change much in the future, and his friends have come to accept this as endearing behavior. Noctis won't outright refuse to clean or cook when asked, but he won't avoid whining about it either.
One of the best qualities about Noctis is that despite being a prince accustom to royal treatment, he is actually quite humble for someone in that position. This has been fostered by living on his own, by learning that you have to work for what you have and being a prince doesn't mean you are immune to it. He is a kind soul, gentle to most who deserve that type of treatment. Noctis prefers to be friends with people outside of royalty, which is shown in the closeness he shares with Prompto. Prompto was once an awkward, quiet boy with large self-esteem problems that Noctis looked past from the beginning. He appreciates the optimism and sense of humor Prompto developed in his young age, and actually clings to it. It's important to associate one's self with chipper people, as it makes his own burden a bit less heavy.
He is kind, humorous, hot-headed, and awkward. Noctis is quite comfortable with the previous arrangement of marrying Lady Lunafreya, though he kept this to himself. He and Luna shared exchanging a notebook over the course of their twelve years of separation to keep in touch. His ultimate softness is only shown in the face of her attention. While he hasn't quite come to understand his feelings for Lunafreya, he has no issues showing how much she means to him through private notes. Prompto and Gladiolus can see this, and Noctis' discomfort is very quickly shown when they prod at him as the groom-to-be that he was. This is made from the shyness that Noctis feels in the face of emotions and feelings that he may be slightly embarrassed of. He is to be a king someday, and even if he likes to often ignore that responsibility, the need to be taken seriously is there.
Inventory: The Ring of Lucii (which is on his finger) and his father's sword.
Abilities:
Royal Arms: Noctis has inherited holy weapons from the past Kings of Lucis over the course of the game -- Approximately 13. However, from his current canon point, they are not accessible by him. For the sake of explaining his abilities, they are powerful weapons that he is able to summon at-will from within.
Ring of Lucii: This ring symbolizes the power of the past Kings of Lucii, and thus initiates the council of these past kings. It contains an ultimate form of power that no normal mortal can withstand, and will destroy the one that wears it, should the council of Kings reject its wearer. Noctis, as the Chosen King, is able to wear and utilize it's power. This ring has the ability to completely deteriorate and banish an enemy into the unknown, or simply sap its energy and vitality to transfer to the wearer.
Phasing: Noctis has the ability to phase through and past obstacles quickly with a simple gesture of throwing his weapon in the general direction he seeks to go. This provides a huge amount of momentum when targeted towards an enemy, but does take a physical toll on him.
Blessing of the Gods: While these ethereal-type abilities may not be accessible within the game's universe, Noctis does have the blessings of Shiva, Titan, Ramuh and Leviathan-- Deities that influence the world of Eos and carry a great bout of power over the elements. He is able to summon these gods for assistance in battle.
Physical combat: By weapons, mostly. Noctis is proficient with sword fighting and the utilization of ammo-based weaponry.
Flaws: Dialing back to the personality section, Noctis' most obvious flaw is his laziness and persistent stubbornness. He is often found sleeping in, dozing off, and even shirking his duties and ignoring what is most important. His fear of gaining the responsibility of an entire kingdom has plagued him since adolescence, and he has only just started to recognize the greater purpose that he is meant for.
He is spoiled, sheltered, and incredibly awkward. Noctis' upbringing was exclusively within the walls of privilege and high-quality living. As a child having suffered from a massive injury from the attack of the Marilith, Noctis was coddled and cared over for an extended period of time, which really didn't change much even after his recovery. Exploiting his laziness and aloofness would likely be easy depending on how it is implemented. While Noctis is brave and determined at the turning point in Chapter 13, these are habits that are new to being changed and adjusted. They are not set in stone, especially if he manages to get comfortable.
